There was also special significance to Spirited Away taking the Oscar win during only the second year after the Best Animated Feature category was created. He explains that its popularity had a compounding effect on that of another Studio Ghibli release from four years earlier. The significance of Spirited Away ’s box office records and awards release by Disney following a complicated history between Miyazaki and foreign distributors, and the film’s lasting impact on Japanese animation and beyond.
